ABOUT US
HISTORY
Fifth Street Christian Church, founded as Second Christian Church Disciples of Christ in 1861, is considered the first black church in the city. During the first few years of its existence members met for worship in several places around the city.
In 1872, Rev. Baskett along with a membership of approximately 40 congregants, purchased lot #371 located at Ash and Seventh street. The one room frame building and ground cost $1200.00. There was no plumbing, and water was heated by wood and coal stove. Carpet lined the aisles and pulpit of the church and the baptismal pool at that time was erected underneath the choir stand and to use the baptismal pool one had to lift a trap door to enter.
Rev. H.D. Griffin became the minister in 1919 and brought with him new ideas and new plans for the church. During his ministry the church built a structure with a parsonage, 5 Sunday School rooms, dining room, kitchen board room and a minister study room. Under Rev. Griffins leadership the ministry grew tremendously which required them to have two services on Sundays.
The present structure was built in 1928 under the leadership of Rev. Martin.
From 1928 until now we have had numerous of Pastor’s each given their instructions and visions from God for the direction of this Church. In December 2022 God sent Rev. Katina Colon and family to take us to another level.
Fifth Street Christian Church continues to “Stand on the Promises of God”. We are extremely grateful for God’s presence and the dedication of our community and members.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
As members of the Christian Church,
We confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ’s name and by his grace
we accept our mission of witness
and service to all people.
We rejoice in God,
maker of heaven and earth,
and in God’s covenant of love
which binds us to God and to one another.
Through baptism into Christ
we enter into newness of life
and are made one with the whole people of God.
In the communion of the Holy Spirit
we are joined together in discipleship
and in obedience to Christ.
At the Table of the Lord
we celebrate with thanksgiving
the saving acts and presence of Christ.
Within the universal church
we receive the gift of ministry
and the light of scripture.
In the bonds of Christian faith
we yield ourselves to God
that we may serve the One
whose kingdom has no end.
Blessing, glory, and honor
be to God forever. Amen.
